A Servant's Life, the story of St. Francis

God calls us to be his servants, and the servants of all his creation. St. Francis of Assissi (1181-1226) was born in Italy to life of luxury. He drank, caroused, and was generally wasting his life but then he heard the voice of God, and his life was changed. He rebuilt a small chapel and chose a life of poverty, and could be seen talking to the animals, the birds, and mother earth all the while serving the poor and afflicted. He is considered, among other things, to be the patron saint of the environment and has long been studied for his charity, Love, and humility. Some may know of him from the prayer of St. Francis; In part: "Oh Divine master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life."

Amen
